KANO, Nigeria — The Kano State Government rolls out a satellite-based digital vehicle tracking system to improve road safety, curb crime, and strengthen transport regulation across the state.
The new platform, branded the Smart Transport Solution, enables real-time monitoring of commercial vehicles and allows security agencies to respond swiftly to emergencies and criminal activity. The initiative launches through a public-private partnership between the Ministry of Transport and AS&J Company.
Commissioner for Transport Haruna Dederi on Saturday says the system places Kano in line with global cities already using digital transport intelligence.
“This solution allows us to monitor vehicle movement in real time and respond faster to security threats,” Dederi says. “Technology is no longer optional in managing a growing city like Kano.”
The first phase targets tricycles, taxis, buses, trailers and fuel tankers, with access granted to the Police, Ministry of Transport and the Cabinet Office for coordinated oversight. Expansion to private vehicles follows later.
AS&J Head of Operations Dr Aminu Maigari says the application is free to download, but operators must pay a ₦28,000 registration and identity verification fee, with the state subsidising 10 per cent for the first one million users.
“Beyond security, this system promotes accountability, transparency and efficiency across the transport sector,” Maigari says.
Officials say sensitisation campaigns with transport unions are already under way as phased implementation begins Monday.
