Professor Amina Salihi Bayero
KANO, Nigeria – Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved the appointment of Professor Amina Salihi Bayero as the substantive Vice Chancellor of Northwest University, following what officials describe as a rigorous and competitive selection process. Her five-year tenure takes effect from 1 December 2025.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who said the appointment reflects the administration’s commitment to merit-driven leadership across tertiary institutions. Governor Yusuf, who serves as the Visitor to the university, praised the Governing Council for upholding due process, describing the appointment as a milestone for academic excellence in the state.
He urged stakeholders to fully support the new Vice Chancellor as she works to reposition the institution. “We pray for Allah’s guidance as she assumes the responsibilities of her office,” the governor added.
Professor Bayero, a renowned analytical chemist and the first woman to earn a PhD in Chemistry from Bayero University, Kano, has held various senior academic roles including Head of Department, Dean of Science and Deputy Vice Chancellor at Yusuf Maitama Sule University.
