KADUNA, Nigeria – The Kaduna State Government inaugurates a 17-member task force to curb the diversion of life-saving nutrition commodities, following mounting complaints that critical supplies fail to reach vulnerable women and children.
Presiding over the inauguration on Wednesday, Planning and Budget Commission Commissioner Mukhtar Ahmed say years of investment by government and partners risk being undermined by weak oversight and accountability gaps.
“The success of these efforts relies on accountability and the proper use of resources,” Ahmed says, warning that distribution lapses indicate essential supplies are not reaching intended beneficiaries.
Chairman of the task force and Permanent Secretary, Mukhtar Abdullahi, says the committee is formed in direct response to persistent diversion concerns. He pledges strict monitoring, tracking and verification mechanisms.
“We will do everything possible to ensure that these essential supplies reach the intended beneficiaries,” Abdullahi says.
The initiative receives backing from UNICEF, whose Kaduna Chief of Field Office, Gerida Birikula—represented by Nutrition Specialist Chinwe Ezeife—describes the move as a decisive step towards transparency.
She warns that misuse and poor management of nutrition commodities pose a direct threat to vulnerable populations, reaffirming UNICEF’s commitment to technical support, improved documentation and accountability systems.
