JOS, Nigeria – Two people die and 16 others sustain injuries after a fuel tanker loses control and crashes into several vehicles near St Louis College in Jos, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirms.
FRSC Public Education Officer, Peter Longsan, discloses the details in a statement issued on Monday following the conclusion of rescue operations. He says 18 people are involved in the crash, which occurs on Sunday evening.
Eyewitnesses say the tanker suffers brake failure shortly after the Plateau State Specialist Hospital Roundabout, triggering multiple collisions along the busy roadway. “The tanker lost control and rammed into vehicles ahead,” an eyewitness says. “People rushed to help before emergency teams arrived.”
The injured are taken to the Plateau State Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BUTH), while the deceased are deposited at BUTH’s morgue.
Longsan says emergency responders act swiftly to prevent further casualties. “FRSC, in collaboration with the police, army, fire service, Vehicle Inspection Officers and the Nigerian Red Cross, cordoned off the area and diverted traffic,” he says.
He adds that the petroleum product is safely transloaded without spillage, while all wrecked vehicles and obstructions are cleared by midnight.
FRSC Sector Commander in Plateau State, Olajide E. Mogaji, commends inter-agency collaboration and urges motorists to prioritise safety. “Road users should drive responsibly and promptly report emergencies through the FRSC emergency number 122,” Mogaji says.
