Kano, Nigeria – The Jigawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency (PHCDA) has launched a major integrated vaccination campaign to immunise 3,186,521 children against measles and rubella across all 27 local government areas of the state.
State Immunisation Officer Shehu Ibrahim disclosed this during a media dialogue and sensitisation programme on Sunday ahead of the exercise, which begins today (Monday) and runs from 6 to 15 October 2025.
He said the campaign aims to protect children aged 9 months to 14 years against measles and rubella, 0 to 59 months against polio with the novel oral polio vaccine (nOPV), 9 to 14 years against HPV, and 0 to 23 months through routine immunisation.
“This exercise is crucial to protect our children from vaccine-preventable diseases,” Ibrahim stated. “We are targeting nearly half of Jigawa’s population — about 48 to 49 percent — who fall within the eligible age groups.”
He added that vaccinations will take place in primary and secondary health facilities as well as designated public buildings, ensuring accessibility for parents and caregivers.
“We urge parents, guardians, and community leaders to mobilise their wards,” Ibrahim said. “The success of this campaign depends on community participation.”
According to PHCDA, the initiative is part of the state’s broader effort to sustain herd immunity and reduce childhood mortality through expanded immunisation coverage.
