Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi
DUTSE, Nigeria – Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi has inaugurated the State Nutrition Council to strengthen the Presidential Nutrition 774 Initiative and intensify efforts to end child malnutrition.
Speaking in Dutse on Friday during a visit by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Health, Mrs Uju Rochas-Anwukah, Governor Namadi said the state invests ₦13.5 million monthly and ₦300 million annually in nutrition programmes, saving over 300,000 children from malnutrition.
“Our interventions have transformed lives,” Namadi said. “No child in Jigawa should suffer from preventable hunger.”
He revealed that 600 women had been trained to produce and package locally made food supplements awaiting NAFDAC registration — a move that empowers women and boosts local food production.
Mrs Rochas-Anwukah commended the state’s commitment but urged timely fund releases and the establishment of nutrition departments across ministries. She also called for maternity and paternity leave policies to enhance infant feeding and care.
The Nutrition 774 Initiative, launched by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, promotes community-led action and multi-sector collaboration to combat malnutrition and improve food security nationwide.
Governor Namadi pledged continued partnership with stakeholders, reaffirming Jigawa’s resolve to remain a model state in nutrition governance and public health.
