Eco-friendly toilet built from recycled bottles in Abuja
ABUJA, Nigeria – The International Climate Change Development Initiative (ICCDI) Africa has launched its innovative Eco-Friendly Toilet on Friday at LEA Primary School, Aleyita Lugbe, Abuja, showcasing how community-driven climate solutions can enhance sanitation and protect the environment.
The facility, constructed with over 10,000 recycled PET bottles, was unveiled as part of ICCDI Africa’s mission to deliver practical and scalable climate innovations that address open defecation while promoting environmental sustainability.
During the commissioning, Deputy Director of Water Quality Control & Sanitation at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Mrs. Abosede Orimoloye, reaffirmed government support for eliminating open defecation nationwide.
She urged the school community to “protect and maintain the facility so it can serve generations to come,” stressing that safe sanitation is a fundamental human right.
Speaking on the significance of the project,Founder and Executive Director of ICCDI Africa, Olumide Idowu, said: “Our work has always centred on practical climate action – finding simple, innovative, and sustainable solutions to local challenges. By using recycled PET bottles and collaborating with UNICEF, the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, RUWASA, and NGYouthSDGs, we are addressing two critical issues simultaneously: plastic pollution and inadequate sanitation.”
He added that the project stands as “a powerful example of what can be achieved through partnership, innovation, and community engagement,” reaffirming ICCDI Africa’s commitment to building “a cleaner, greener, and healthier Nigeria – one community at a time.”
