YOBE, Nigeria Unknown gunmen attacked the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Damaturu, Yobe State, on Friday, shooting and injuring a police officer guarding the facility.
The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m., leaving the officer hospitalised at the Police Hospital emergency unit.
Confirming the attack, NUJ Yobe Council Chairman, Comrade Rajab Ismail Mohammed, condemned the act as “unfortunate and scary,” stressing that the Secretariat is a vital safe space for journalists.
He urged security agencies to urgently investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The attack is a grim reminder of the vulnerability of journalists and media institutions in Yobe. Freedom of the press cannot thrive under fear and intimidation,” the NUJ stated.
Preliminary investigations suggest the officer was specifically targeted, though concerns remain over whether journalists were also potential victims.
The union called on the Yobe State Government and security operatives to provide stronger protection for media houses, warning that failure to apprehend the culprits could embolden future assaults.
“Justice must be served to forestall recurrence,” the council declared.
Police have launched investigations to establish the attackers’ motives, with patrols in the capital city now heightened.
