AWKA, Nigeria — Panic grips Nawfia community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State after unknown gunmen open fire near Afor Market Junction, leaving a yet-to-be-confirmed number of people feared dead.
Residents say the attackers strike suddenly on Sunday evening, shooting indiscriminately at unsuspecting members of the community before fleeing the scene. Several victims sustain fatal injuries, while others escape amid chaos.
“The armed hoodlums invaded Afor Market Junction and immediately opened fire, killing a lot of people,” a local source says. “Nobody knows the motive, but the community is deeply shaken.”
Eyewitnesses describe scenes of terror as residents run for cover. “It was chaos,” one witness recounts. “They came in a commando-like manner and started shooting without warning.”
Video footage circulating on social media shows people fleeing the area, with bodies lying motionless in pools of blood, though authorities are yet to officially confirm casualty figures.
The President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, Chief Daniel Okoye, confirms the attack in a statement on Monday, saying security agencies have been alerted and investigations are underway.
“I received with deep shock the tragic news of an attack at the Afor Market Junction,” Okoye says. “This senseless act of violence has resulted in multiple casualties.”
Police say investigations have commenced to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, as calls grow for increased security presence in the area amid rising concerns over public safety.
