OGUN, Nigeria – Gateway International Airport (GWI) in Iperu, Ogun State, is scheduled to receive its first commercial flight on October 7, marking a significant milestone for the state’s aviation sector.
The state government confirmed in a statement that domestic carrier ValueJet will operate the maiden flight. ValueJet’s Managing Director, Capt. Dapo Majekodunmi, expressed excitement: “We are delighted to be the first airline to commence operations at GWI.”
Initially, ValueJet will run two weekly flights to Abuja—departing Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. and arriving at 9:45 a.m. Return flights leave Abuja at 4:00 p.m. and arrive in GWI at 5:15 p.m.
Strategically located near the Sagamu Interchange and Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, GWI was granted an Aerodrome Operational Permit by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority in 2024.
Governor Dapo Abiodun emphasised the airport’s potential: “Flights will operate from here to Abuja and Port Harcourt. Additionally, GWI is designated as an alternate landing site for Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport, increasing its national importance.”
The governor said the airport’s world-class infrastructure would boost connectivity, attract investment, and enhance Ogun’s image. “With international facilities and a prime location, GWI will set a new standard for air travel in Nigeria,” he added.
The commissioning is expected to attract aviation stakeholders, government officials, and investors eager to leverage GWI’s strategic value.
