OGUN, Nigeria – The Federal Road Safety Corps on Friday warns motorists observing fasting periods to prioritise rest, saying fatigue and dehydration could trigger fatal road crashes.
The advice comes as Christians and Muslims observe their respective fasting seasons. Commander overseeing the Sagamu–Ore–Benin corridor, Nasir Mohammed, says prolonged driving while fasting significantly reduces alertness.
“Drivers who are fasting may experience fatigue, reduced concentration and slower reaction time,” Mohammed tells journalists in Ota. “We advise motorists to take a break after every four hours of driving.”
He cautions against speeding and dangerous overtaking, stressing that strict adherence to traffic regulations remains critical during the period.
Mohammed urges all road users to make conscious safety choices. “Rest is not optional. Lives depend on it,” he says.
The FRSC says heightened awareness and responsible driving could prevent avoidable loss of life during the fasting season.
