Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo
KOGI, Nigeria – The Kogi State Government has approved free health insurance coverage for people living with sickle cell disorder, a move aimed at reducing treatment costs and improving access to healthcare services for affected residents.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo announced the initiative as part of activities marking this year’s World Sickle Cell Day, according to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo on Friday.
The intervention will provide enrolled beneficiaries, popularly known as Sickle Cell Warriors, with access to healthcare services through accredited facilities across the state.
Governor Ododo said the programme reflects his administration’s commitment to protecting vulnerable residents and ensuring that no citizen is denied healthcare because of financial limitations.
“The initiative reflects our commitment to building a healthier society where vulnerable citizens receive the care and support they deserve,” he said.
He described sickle cell disorder as a significant public health challenge and called for increased awareness, early diagnosis and effective disease management.
According to the governor, the scheme is expected to reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenses while improving health outcomes for patients living with the condition.
Ododo also urged residents to embrace genotype testing and genetic counselling as important preventive measures against sickle cell disease.
He commended healthcare professionals, advocacy groups, caregivers, parents and development partners supporting individuals affected by the disorder.
The governor assured beneficiaries that his administration would continue to implement policies and programmes designed to improve their quality of life.
