KATSINA, Nigeria – The Federal Government and Katsina State Government have agreed to convert approximately 123,000 hectares of grazing reserves into modern ranches and livestock support centres to strengthen Nigeria’s livestock economy and expand halal meat production.
Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, disclosed the plan during a meeting with Governor Dikko Umaru Radda in Abuja on Monday.
Maiha praised Katsina’s investment in livestock development, particularly the establishment of a dedicated Ministry of Livestock and what he described as Nigeria’s largest goat-rearing farm, with over 3,000 animals.
“We will work closely with Katsina to develop modern ranches and livestock infrastructure that boost productivity and create jobs across the value chain,” Maiha said. He added that he will soon visit the state to assess sites and finalise implementation.
Governor Radda welcomed the partnership, calling the new federal ministry a “bold step towards transforming livestock production and reducing conflicts.”
He said Katsina plans to establish halal meat processing plants in partnership with private investors to tap into Middle Eastern markets.
“Our goal is to make Katsina the northern hub for halal meat export. This will create jobs, attract investment and grow our economy,” Radda said.
He requested Katsina’s inclusion in federal livestock initiatives, especially in ranching systems, feed production, and livestock infrastructure upgrades.
