FG Selects 16,000 Nigerians for Digital Training Academy

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has selected 16,000 Nigerians for the inaugural cohort of its Digital Training Academy (DTA), following overwhelming interest in the nationwide digital skills initiative.

The National Coordinator of the Special Projects and Innovation Unit at the Federal Ministry of Education, Adebayo Onibanjo, disclosed this on Wednesday during a media briefing ahead of the academy’s official launch on September 14.

According to him, the ministry received 72,850 applications from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory between August 17 and September 1.

Of the applications received, 19,699 candidates met the eligibility requirements, while 16,000 were selected for the first phase of the programme.

The academy, implemented under the Nigeria Education Digital Infrastructure (NEDI) programme as part of the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), aims to equip young Nigerians with globally competitive digital skills at no cost.

Training for the pioneer cohort will be delivered through international online learning platforms Coursera and Pluralsight, giving participants access to industry-recognised digital courses.

Onibanjo described the first cohort as the foundation for the academy’s nationwide expansion, noting that the programme is expected to complement existing government investments in digital skills development and prepare more Nigerians for opportunities in the global digital economy.

He added that details of subsequent application windows and expansion plans would be announced during the official launch of the Digital Training Academy on September 14.
