Mr. Bola Oyebamiji
OSOGBO, Nigeria – The Federal Government allocates ₦14.6 billion for the procurement of modern vessels to replace unsafe wooden boats and improve safety and commercial activity on Nigeria’s inland waterways.
Former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr Bola Oyebamiji, discloses the investment during a courtesy visit by maritime journalists in Osun State.
He says the initiative follows a proposal submitted through the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy to address safety gaps and boost agricultural logistics.
“The approved funding will support the acquisition of modern boats and ferries that meet international safety standards,” Oyebamiji says.
The vessels are set for deployment in Niger, Benue, Kogi, Kwara and Kebbi states, where waterways remain critical transport routes.
Oyebamiji notes that improved vessels will reduce food transportation costs and improve access to urban markets.
However, he stresses that human behaviour remains a key risk factor.
“About 70 per cent of accidents stem from human error, including alcohol and substance use by operators,” he says.
He credits improved training, supervision and staff motivation for significant operational gains during his tenure.
The remarks come as Oyebamiji, now the APC governorship candidate in Osun, receives a nomination for excellence in maritime leadership.
