ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government orders the immediate closure of a mining site in Plateau State after several villagers die from inhaling toxic gases while engaging in artisanal mining.
The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, directs the suspension of all activities at Mining Licence 11810, operated by Solid Unit Nigeria Limited, in Zuraq community, Wase Local Government Area.
In a statement issued by his media aide Segun Tomori on Wednesday, Alake expresses deep sorrow and conveys condolences to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang.
“The victims are innocent citizens trying to earn a living,” the minister says, pledging federal support for the affected community.
A high-level investigative team led by Permanent Secretary Yusuf Yabo is dispatched to probe the incident and recommend sanctions. Preliminary findings indicate the site is an abandoned lead mine emitting sulphuric oxide gas, with villagers unaware of the danger.
The tragedy highlights persistent risks posed by abandoned mining pits across Nigeria, particularly in Plateau, Zamfara and Niger states, where informal mining often thrives amid poverty and weak enforcement.
Officials say further disclosures will follow as investigations continue.
