FG Lists 15m Vulnerable Households for Conditional Cash Transfers

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has disclosed that about 15 million vulnerable households have been shortlisted to benefit from ongoing conditional cash transfer programmes designed to cushion the effects of economic hardship nationwide.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, made the disclosure during an interview on Arise Television on Friday, explaining that the intervention is being implemented in partnership with the World Bank as a temporary shock-response mechanism.
According to the minister, Nigeria’s National Social Register currently captures about 17.9 million vulnerable households, but only households meeting specific programme criteria are placed on the Benefit Register, which presently stands at roughly 15 million.
“Being listed on the National Social Register does not automatically qualify anyone for cash support,” Doro said. “Each programme has its own objectives and eligibility requirements.”
He explained that the register represents nearly 70 million individuals, identified through community-based assessments, validation visits and socio-economic profiling aimed at ensuring that support reaches the poorest Nigerians.
Doro added that the Federal Government plans to expand the register further while strengthening verification systems to ensure transparency and accountability in social protection delivery.
