ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has disowned a purported diplomatic letter circulating online and allegedly sent to the Government of Liberia, warning that the document is fake and part of a misinformation campaign.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the document, which falsely claimed to have originated from the office of Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, did not emanate from any official government channel.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the ministry described the letter as fraudulent and urged the public to disregard its contents.
“The Ministry wishes to categorically state that the said letter is fake, unauthorised, and did not emanate from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or any official channel of the Federal Government of Nigeria,” the statement said.
According to the ministry, the document purportedly contained comments attributed to a Nigerian religious leader and was allegedly addressed to Liberia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Officials said a preliminary review exposed several inconsistencies that failed to meet established diplomatic communication standards and protocols.
The government warned that the fabricated correspondence appeared designed to create confusion and undermine the longstanding diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and Liberia.
“The document appears intended to mislead the public and potentially strain relations between two friendly nations,” the ministry noted.
Authorities urged media organisations, social media users and stakeholders to verify information before sharing materials capable of spreading misinformation.
The ministry also disclosed that relevant authorities have been notified and investigations are underway to identify those responsible for creating and distributing the fake document.
