ABUJA, Nigeria – The European Commission has approved €2.3 million in emergency humanitarian assistance for Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and the Central African Republic to strengthen efforts to contain the ongoing cholera outbreak across the region.
Nigeria will receive €1.5 million—the largest share of the funding—to support emergency response activities.
According to the European Commission, the intervention will strengthen rapid response teams, provide cholera treatment kits and improve water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, including the treatment of public water sources and household water supplies.
The funding will also support disease surveillance in hard-to-reach communities, improve case management, strengthen risk communication and expand community sensitisation campaigns.
The intervention comes as the World Health Organization (WHO) reported more than 61,000 cholera cases across the African region during the first five months of 2026.
Cameroon will receive €100,000 to strengthen outbreak containment, expand cholera treatment centres, deploy additional healthcare personnel and provide essential medicines in affected communities.
The Central African Republic will receive €500,000 to scale up vaccination, case management, surveillance, community engagement and water, sanitation and hygiene interventions, while Chad will receive €200,000 to improve access to clean water, strengthen disease surveillance and support emergency healthcare services.
European Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, said the funding would enable humanitarian partners to respond quickly and protect vulnerable communities.
“Cholera is preventable and treatable. Yet it still threatens lives when people lack something as basic as safe water and healthcare,” Lahbib said.
She added that despite growing humanitarian demands globally, the European Union remained committed to supporting countries affected by the outbreak.
Cholera is a waterborne disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae and can rapidly become fatal if severe dehydration is not treated promptly.
