ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Ministry of Environment has joined Nigeria’s digital transformation drive with the launch of the Galaxy Backbone 1Government Cloud Digitalisation Programme, marking a milestone in public service modernisation and data sovereignty.
Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal in a statement on Sunday described the initiative as “a major step in modernising environmental governance and driving sustainability through technology.”
“Digitalisation is no longer optional; it’s a necessity,” Lawal said. “Through the Galaxy Backbone 1Government Cloud, we are enabling data-driven environmental management, cutting costs, and reducing carbon emissions.”
Programme Director Wumi Oghoetuoma said the system provides secure, homegrown digital tools such as GovECM, GovMail, and GovESign to replace fragmented systems.
He called it “a bold stride in Africa’s digital transformation—by Africa, for Africa.”
Permanent Secretary Mahmud Adam Kambari and Dr Sam Nwosu, CEO of Secured Records Management Solutions, praised the platform’s role in enhancing transparency and paperless governance.
