ENUGU, Nigeria – The Wife of the Enugu State Governor, Mrs Nkechinyere Mbah, has enrolled 868 vulnerable pregnant women into the state’s health insurance scheme to improve access to maternal healthcare and reduce the financial burden of childbirth.
The beneficiaries were enrolled through the Custos Care Foundation (CCF) during the MamaCare Health Insurance Onboarding Programme, held at the International Conference Centre, Enugu.
Speaking during the event on Saturday, Mrs. Mbah said the initiative was designed to ensure pregnant women receive quality antenatal, delivery and postnatal care without financial hardship.
She explained that the expanded MamaCare Initiative focuses on healthcare access, maternal nutrition, safe pregnancy and delivery, as well as postnatal support.
According to her, more than 1,800 pregnant women were enrolled during the programme’s first phase in 2024, with the latest enrolment expanding its reach across all 17 local government areas of Enugu State.
“Health insurance is not just about providing a card. It is about providing access, protection and sometimes saving lives,” she said.
Mrs. Mbah urged expectant mothers to attend antenatal clinics regularly and seek prompt medical attention whenever complications arise.
Executive Secretary of the Enugu State Agency for Universal Health Coverage, Mrs Edith Okolo, said the governor’s wife was sponsoring one year of health insurance for each beneficiary.
She explained that beneficiaries would receive treatment at accredited public, private and mission hospitals across the state, covering antenatal care, childbirth and healthcare services for newborns.
Okolo added that beneficiaries would be encouraged to renew their health insurance after the sponsored one-year period at an annual premium of N12,000.
Managing Director of Custos Care Foundation, Mrs. Egodi Igwe, disclosed that the foundation has now enrolled 2,669 pregnant women since launching the initiative and invested more than N20 million in maternal health insurance.
