BENIN CITY, Nigeria – The Edo State Government has launched the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) to curb preventable deaths among mothers and newborns and strengthen healthcare delivery statewide.
The five-day capacity-building workshop, which began Monday in Benin City, brings together health experts from the Federal Ministry of Health, Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, and medical associations.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, said the initiative marks “a new phase in Edo’s journey to safer motherhood through innovation and data-driven action.”
Special Adviser on Health, Dr. Andrew Iyamu, and Primary Healthcare Agency Chairman, Dr. Odiase Ehiabhi, said MAMII aligns with the state’s broader goal of reducing maternal deaths by promoting community-based solutions.
Federal Ministry of Health representative Mrs. Jacinta Igbigbi commended Edo’s swift adoption of the national framework introduced in 2024, calling it “a proactive step to safeguard mothers and children.”
Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Eustace Oseghale, urged continued commitment “so that no woman dies while giving life.”
The programme aims to generate actionable policies to lower maternal and neonatal deaths, positioning Edo as a leader in healthcare innovation.
