ABUJA, Nigeria – Public health experts raise alarm over rising diarrhoea cases, urging improved hygiene, nutrition and access to safe water to reduce child deaths across Nigeria.
According to the World Health Organisation, diarrhoea remains the second leading cause of death among children under five globally.
Community health worker Daniel Tari says dehydration is the most dangerous complication. “Simple hygiene practices like handwashing and clean water can drastically reduce risks,” he explains.
Nutritionist Rejoice Ladan emphasises the role of proper feeding. “Exclusive breastfeeding strengthens immunity and protects children from infections,” she states.
Health officials also stress the importance of vaccination and early detection, warning that untreated symptoms can lead to severe complications or death.
Experts call for nationwide awareness campaigns, particularly in rural areas, to promote preventive practices and improve child survival rates.
