DELTA, Nigeria- The Delta State Government has introduced a revised dress code for civil servants, warning that improper dressing will no longer be tolerated across the public service.
The directive, contained in a circular signed by the Office of the Head of Service and released by the governor’s New Media Office on Thursday, seeks to “uphold decency in the appearance of Public Servants across the State.”
The new code replaces an earlier March 2009 directive and sets stricter standards for male and female officers. Male officers on Grade Levels 13 and above are required to appear in complete suits, while female officers must wear corporate attire such as skirt suits, trouser suits, or gowns below knee length.
Traditional attire will only be allowed on Fridays and special occasions, with strict prohibitions on certain items including papas’ caps, bushy beards, sleeveless outfits, provocative dresses, artificial nails, and tinted hair.
The circular warned that erring officers will be sent home immediately and risk further sanctions under the Public Service Rules.
Heads of departments and Permanent Secretaries have been directed to enforce the directive by leading with examples of appropriate dressing.
The state government said the move reflects its broader push for professionalism, discipline, and improved public service culture.
