KANO, Nigeria – The Kano State Government launches the distribution of 100,000 bags of rice donated by the Aliko Dangote Foundation, pledging transparent delivery to vulnerable households across the state.
Governor Abba Yusuf, represented at the ceremony on Saturday by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ibrahim, says community structures will oversee the distribution to prevent diversion.
The governor describes the intervention as timely, noting that the Ramadan period places additional pressure on low-income families.
“This donation is both meaningful and timely, particularly during Ramadan when many vulnerable households face increased hardship,” Ibrahim says on behalf of the governor.
Officials say local community leaders and stakeholders will monitor the distribution process from beneficiary identification to final delivery.
The state government insists that strict accountability mechanisms have been put in place to ensure the food relief reaches those most in need.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources Danjuma Mahmud praises the Dangote Foundation for trusting the government with managing the large-scale humanitarian effort.
“The foundation’s confidence in the state government reflects trust in our ability to handle this operation responsibly,” Mahmud says.
He adds that collaboration between the private sector and government remains essential in addressing poverty and food insecurity.
The rice donation forms part of the Dangote Foundation’s broader humanitarian outreach across Nigeria.
Through its philanthropic initiatives, the foundation has supported food security programmes and poverty-reduction efforts in several states.
Kano officials say the rice distribution complements ongoing government welfare programmes aimed at easing economic hardship among vulnerable communities.
