MINNA, Nigeria – A humanitarian organisation has donated 25 motorised hospital beds to the Niger Leprosy Hospital in Minna, a move health officials say will significantly improve patient comfort and recovery.
The donation was made on Thursday by The Leprosy Mission Nigeria (TLMN) with financial support from its Swiss partner organisation.
Operations Manager Pius Ogbu says the adjustable electronic beds will enable patients to regulate their sleeping and resting positions more easily.
“With these electronic motorised beds, patients can now adjust to suit their comfortability. We have no doubt that the beds will help patients to have good sleep and get quick recovery,” Ogbu said during the handover ceremony on Thursday.
The donation includes matching bed sheets and pillowcases and forms part of the mission’s broader programme supporting leprosy care in Niger State.
Beyond treatment, the organisation also provides free medical services, rehabilitation programmes, vocational training and orthopaedic support for affected patients.
Officials say addressing the social stigma associated with leprosy remains central to their humanitarian work.
Niger State Commissioner for Health Murtala Bagana accepts the equipment on behalf of the state government and pledges further support to strengthen the facility.
“Niger Government is happy to receive this consignment, and we will ensure we complement the efforts of TLMN by upgrading the Leprosy Hospital and providing necessary commodities for their upkeep,” he says.
Bagana adds that the government will deploy a consultant physician to the hospital to enhance clinical care for patients.
Health experts say the donation will help improve hospital conditions and strengthen treatment support for people living with leprosy in the region.
