BORNO, Nigeria – Nigerian troops repel a coordinated Boko Haram/ISWAP attack in Borno State, killing more than 60 insurgents, including key commanders, during a fierce overnight battle.
The assault occurred around 12:50 a.m. on Wednesday in Mallam Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area, when fighters advanced from the Duguri axis using armed drones to target a military base.
The Nigerian Army confirms that troops of Operation Hadin Kai detect the attackers early and respond with “overwhelming firepower” in coordination with air support.
“In a well-coordinated operation, troops neutralised over 60 terrorist fighters, including notorious commanders,” the Army states.
The intense exchange forces surviving insurgents to retreat towards the Arege area in disarray.
Military authorities say follow-up operations are underway, with surveillance platforms deployed to track fleeing fighters and prevent regrouping.
“Troops have commenced exploitation operations to pursue and eliminate fleeing terrorists,” the statement adds.
The Army reaffirms its commitment to sustaining pressure on insurgents and protecting civilians.
The attack forms part of a series of recent attempts on military positions in Borno, including earlier assaults in Damboa, Baga and Ajiri Cross.
