KANO, Nigeria – Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin has concluded plans to distribute 53,040 bags of fertilizer to farmers across 13 local government areas in Kano North ahead of the 2026 planting season.
The intervention, equivalent to 88 truckloads of fertilizer, is expected to begin on May 31 as farmers grapple with rising production costs and worsening food inflation across Nigeria.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by Barau’s media aide, Ismail Mudashir, the fertilizer distribution forms part of efforts to boost agricultural productivity and support food security in the region.
The beneficiaries include farmers, local government officials, APC stakeholders, traditional leaders, school administrators and security personnel across the senatorial district.
Barau says timely access to farm inputs remains critical to increasing yields and stabilising food supply.
“This intervention is aimed at supporting our farmers and complementing the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu towards achieving national food security,” he says.
Agriculture experts say fertilizer prices have surged sharply in recent years due to inflation, foreign exchange pressures and rising transportation costs, forcing many smallholder farmers to cut production.
The intervention targets one of Nigeria’s major agricultural zones, where thousands of households depend heavily on farming for survival.
The senator also urges beneficiaries to ensure proper application of the fertilizer to maximise output during the farming season.
The distribution programme comes amid growing pressure on federal and state authorities to strengthen food production and reduce dependence on imports following persistent inflation in food prices nationwide.
