ABUJA, Nigeria – The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has urged the Federal Government to implement all outstanding provisions of its agreement with tertiary institution unions, while the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) says more than 70 per cent of its agreement has already been implemented.
The presidents of both unions made the remarks on Tuesday during the unveiling of the 2026 Federal Government agreements with staff unions of tertiary institutions in Abuja.
ASUP National President, Comrade Shammah S. Kpanja, described his union’s renegotiation process as the shortest in its history, saying discussions began in 2025 and the agreement was signed in April 2026.
He said the union had received some salary arrears but that several other provisions remained outstanding. “We want to call on the government to ensure that all components of this agreement are implemented,” Kpanja said.
He urged the government to fulfil its outstanding commitments, stressing that the agreement should be implemented in its entirety rather than through selective measures.
Meanwhile, COEASU President, Dr Ahmed Lawan Bazza, said the union had recorded progress in implementing its agreement with the government. “Even without the implementation committee, I can tell you that today we are measuring, we have achieved over 70% of the agreement that has been made,” Bazza said.
He attributed the progress to engagement with the government and the work of the federal negotiation team. Bazza expressed confidence that the proposed joint implementation and monitoring committee would help address outstanding issues affecting colleges of education.
