KANO, Nigeria – A fresh fire outbreak on Saturday evening engulfed Singa Market in Kano metropolis, destroying goods worth millions of naira and causing panic among traders and residents.
The inferno, which reportedly began at a large provision store, sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky, drawing attention across the ancient city.
Eyewitnesses said the fire spread rapidly to adjoining shops before emergency responders arrived. As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire remained unknown.
Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, said firefighters were working to prevent the blaze from spreading further.
“The fire started at the Gidan Gashash area, and our personnel and vehicles have been mobilised to contain it,” Abdullahi said.
He added that access challenges within the market, coupled with heavy human and vehicular movement, hampered firefighting efforts.
A similar fire outbreak on February 2, 2026, destroyed three major stores in the same market, leading to losses estimated at millions of naira. Following that incident, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf donated ₦100 million to affected traders.
Authorities say investigations will commence once the fire is fully extinguished.
