Anambra Boosts Security in Schools and Churches Amid Threat Alerts

AWKA, Nigeria – The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered an immediate strengthening of security measures across schools and churches as part of a proactive strategy to prevent emerging threats and maintain public safety.

In a statement released on Sunday, the spokesperson of the state police command, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the directive aims to reinforce security architecture across all communities. He noted that Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Units have been instructed to intensify patrols, increase intelligence-driven operations, and work more closely with local stakeholders.

Ikenga said the measures are designed to ensure “seamless and effective security coordination,” stressing that the police are adopting a more preventive approach rather than responding only after incidents occur. He added that collaboration with communities remains central to sustaining peace.

The statement quoted CP Orutugu as praising residents for their growing vigilance and unity. “Ndi Anambra have shown commendable cooperation and the spirit of being their brothers’ keepers,” it said. The police chief assured that the command remains committed to protecting lives and property and would continue adapting its strategies to meet evolving threats.

“The Commissioner reiterated the Command’s unwavering dedication to safeguarding the state and maintaining its growing atmosphere of peace,” the statement added.

Police authorities also urged school administrators and religious leaders to strengthen internal security protocols, report suspicious activities promptly, and maintain communication with local security formations.

The announcement comes as several states across Nigeria heighten security around learning centres following renewed attacks targeting schoolchildren. Anambra officials say no major incident has been recorded recently, but the enhanced measures are intended to ensure the state remains secure.
