Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh
AWKA, Nigeria – The Anambra State Government pledges swift prosecution in a disturbing child abuse case, as authorities move to arraign a woman accused of torturing a 17-year-old schoolgirl with a hot electric iron.
The Anambra Commissioner for Education, Professor Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, says the suspect, Osinachi Ede, will face trial before a court of competent jurisdiction, stressing that the government will not tolerate violence against children.
“The suspect will be arraigned for brutalising the victim. This must serve as a deterrent,” Chuma-Udeh says while addressing the accused at her office in Awka.
Police arrested the 29-year-old on February 3 following allegations that she repeatedly burned the teenager, reportedly her house help and a student at Community Secondary School, Agulu Awka.
The commissioner orders the return of the victim, earlier sent to relatives, to Awka for proper care and monitoring, reaffirming the state’s zero-tolerance stance on child abuse.
“This reflects the commitment of Governor Chukwuma Soludo to protect every child in Anambra schools,” she adds. “The full weight of the law will apply to anyone found culpable.”
Child rights advocates say the case highlights the need for stronger enforcement and public awareness to curb domestic abuse across the state.
