Governor Otti Approves N31m Relief Package for 31 Abia Returnees from South Africa

UMUAHIA, Nigeria – Abia State Governor Dr Alex Otti has approved an immediate relief package of N1 million each for 31 indigenes recently repatriated from South Africa as part of efforts to support their reintegration.
The approval, announced in a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku, is intended to provide immediate financial relief and reassure the returnees that the state government remains committed to their welfare.
According to the statement, officials have commenced comprehensive profiling of all 31 beneficiaries to assess their individual needs and develop long-term support programmes.
The assessment will help the government design tailored interventions covering sustainable reintegration, economic empowerment and social protection.
The government described the financial support as a reflection of Governor Otti’s commitment to protecting vulnerable citizens and ensuring that Abians facing difficult circumstances receive the assistance needed to rebuild their lives.
“The gesture underscores Governor Otti’s compassion and unwavering commitment to the welfare of vulnerable persons,” the statement said.
It added that the intervention aligns with the administration’s broader social welfare agenda, which prioritises dignity, inclusion and opportunities for all citizens.
Since assuming office, the government noted, Governor Otti has implemented policies aimed at improving the wellbeing of residents, particularly vulnerable groups.
The statement reaffirmed that Abia remains home to all its citizens, regardless of where they live, stressing that no Abian would be abandoned during periods of hardship.
