ABUJA, Nigeria – Police launch a manhunt for a missing boyfriend following the sudden and unexplained death of a 27-year-old woman, Esther Akwaji, in the Dei-Dei area of the Federal Capital Territory.
The FCT Police Command confirms that Esther, a Nasarawa State resident, left her family’s home on Tuesday, January 21, saying she was heading to Dei-Dei for a banking transaction. She never returned.
Family members say concern escalated late that night when a man claiming to be her boyfriend called to report that Esther had fallen ill while eating at his home.
“He said she started vomiting and became very weak,” her brother, Peter Akwaji, recounts. “He claimed he rushed her to Kubwa General Hospital, where she was declared dead.”
Relatives grow suspicious after learning that the man allegedly left the hospital shortly afterwards and has since gone off all communication.
Following a formal complaint, police recover Esther’s body and deposit it at a mortuary pending an autopsy.
Confirming the case on Friday, FCT Police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh says investigators are treating the death as suspicious.
“We have commenced a full investigation and are making efforts to locate and arrest the suspect,” Adeh says.
Residents of Dei-Dei express anxiety as police appeal for public assistance to trace the missing man.
