ABIA, Nigeria – A primary healthcare centre in Umuahia performs a rare life-saving caesarean section, delivering twins amid severe complications.
The patient, diagnosed with Eclampsia, undergoes emergency surgery at the upgraded Ohiya PHC under Abia’s health reforms.
Health Commissioner Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche says the success validates Governor Alex Otti’s healthcare investments.
“This demonstrates that primary healthcare facilities can now handle complex emergencies,” he says.
The attending physician, Joseph Ngene, explains the patient arrived with seizures and dangerously high blood pressure.
“We stabilised her and performed an emergency caesarean section. Both mother and babies responded well,” he says.
The twins, each weighing 3.2kg, survive alongside their mother—an outcome once unlikely at PHC level.
Authorities plan mobile emergency teams to strengthen rural healthcare response.
Community leader Ubadire Agoha praises the intervention, while the patient’s husband calls it life-saving.
The case highlights progress in reducing maternal mortality through improved primary healthcare infrastructure.
