ANAMBRA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Medical Association has confirmed the release of abducted medical practitioner, Dr Edwin Emegakor, following days in captivity after he was kidnapped in Anambra State.
Chairman of the NMA Anambra branch, Princeton Okam, confirmed the doctor’s release to journalists in Awka on Sunday.
Emegakor, who is the Medical Director of Crown Multi-Specialist Hospital in Nkpor, was reportedly abducted on May 7 after attending to a patient at the hospital.
According to reports, the assailants were unidentified men allegedly dressed in security uniforms during the operation.
Okam expressed gratitude over the doctor’s safe return and commended security operatives for their role in securing his release.
“Our colleague has been rescued safely and reunited with his family,” he said.
“He is healthy, in high spirits, and responding well after the traumatic experience.”
The NMA chairman disclosed that the doctor’s release had prompted a review of the industrial action earlier scheduled to begin on Monday.
“There will be an Emergency General Meeting to decide on the suspension of the planned action,” he added.
The association had earlier threatened to withdraw medical services across Anambra State if the doctor was not released within 48 hours.
Okam thanked individuals and authorities who contributed to the rescue efforts and called on the Anambra State Government to strengthen security across the state.
The incident has renewed concerns over insecurity and the increasing targeting of healthcare professionals in parts of Nigeria.
