IBADAN, Nigeria – Nigeria’s disaster management authorities have intensified preparedness efforts in Oyo State following warnings of heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders after forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency signalled increased rainfall across the state.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Ibadan, NEMA’s South-West Operations Head, Kadiri Olanrewaju, said the engagement was necessary to enhance readiness amid rising risks, including recent road accidents and fire incidents.
“Disaster management is everyone’s responsibility. Strengthening awareness and preparedness is critical to reducing risks,” he said.
Representing the Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, the South-West Zonal Director, Akiode Saheed, emphasised the importance of early warning systems and coordinated response.
“Effective disaster response depends on timely information sharing and strong inter-agency collaboration,” he noted.
Participants, including emergency agencies and security organisations, described the meeting as timely, stressing that improved coordination would enhance response capacity across the state.
