JIGAWA, Nigeria – Governor Umar Namadi unveils plans to scale up aquaculture investment in Jigawa State, targeting increased fish production and improved livelihoods.
Speaking at the Kalgwai Fishing Festival, he says fisheries development remains central to the state’s economic strategy. “This initiative ensures fisheries receive top priority in our development agenda,” he states.
The government has restocked water bodies, produced millions of fingerlings and trained local fishermen to enhance productivity.
Namadi says provisions in the 2026 budget will sustain investments in livestock and fisheries, focusing on infrastructure, capacity building and partnerships.
Commissioner for Livestock Development Abdurrahman Salim reveals plans to hatch five million fish. “This will significantly increase production and strengthen food security,” he says.
With over 243 water bodies, Jigawa positions aquaculture as a key driver of employment, nutrition and economic growth.
