ABUJA, Nigeria – Secondary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) reject the ongoing strike declared by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), directing members to resume classes immediately.
The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) says it is not part of the industrial action, distancing itself from the directive affecting primary and secondary school teachers.
“ASUSS is not part of NUT and should not be involved,” says FCT chairman Julius Ogundiran.
The NUT had ordered an indefinite strike over unresolved welfare issues, including unpaid salary increments and allowances.
However, ASUSS insists its members will not join the protest.
“We will not succumb to pressure. Our members should return to classrooms,” Ogundiran says.
He explains that NUT’s demands largely concern primary school teachers, who fall under area council administration, unlike secondary school teachers managed by the FCT Administration.
Ogundiran acknowledges ongoing concerns over promotions but says authorities are already addressing them.
“We have no reason to join the strike,” he adds.
He also urges secondary school teachers still affiliated with NUT to switch to ASUSS, which operates under the Trade Union Congress.
The directive ensures continued academic activities in FCT secondary schools despite the broader strike action.
