ABUJA, Nigeria – A medical expert, Dr Joshua Oluwayomi warns that low awareness and poor screening uptake are fuelling a silent prostate cancer crisis among Nigerian men.
Speaking on wednesday Dr.Oluwayomi says late detection remains a major cause of preventable deaths, despite the disease being highly treatable when diagnosed early.
“Prostate cancer can be cured if caught early,” he says.
He explains that risk increases significantly with age, particularly after 50, and is higher among men with a family history of the disease.
Oluwayomi highlights that black men face a higher risk of aggressive forms, making early screening critical in Nigeria.
Lifestyle factors—including poor diet, obesity and inactivity—also contribute to rising cases.
He recommends regular screening through Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) tests and Digital Rectal Examination, especially for men aged 40 and above.
“The message is clear: early detection saves lives,” he says.
Although many cases grow slowly and can be managed effectively, he warns that delayed diagnosis continues to drive mortality.
Health experts say improving awareness and routine screening could significantly reduce deaths linked to the disease.
