LAGOS, Nigeria – The Chairman of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, Seyi Jakande, launches a free healthcare scheme targeting vulnerable residents, with 1,000 beneficiaries enrolled in its first phase.
The initiative provides free consultations, maternal and child healthcare, and preventive services to reduce financial barriers to medical care on Monday.
“Today marks a pivotal moment. No resident should be denied healthcare due to economic status,” Jakande says at the launch.
The programme aligns with the council’s HEEWA Agenda, prioritising health and social welfare.
Jakande emphasises that the scheme goes beyond charity. “This is justice. Healthcare must be accessible to all,” he states.
To improve access, the council has completed a new primary healthcare centre in Kayode and plans to deploy an Electronic Medical Records system across facilities.
Health workers will also undergo training to strengthen service delivery.
Officials say the initiative supports broader preventive programmes, including immunisation and outreach services that have already reached over 1,000 residents.
“A healthy population is the foundation of development,” Jakande adds.
Beneficiaries receive health cards granting access to services, with plans to expand coverage across the council area.
Public health experts say such local interventions could ease pressure on Nigeria’s healthcare system and improve outcomes for underserved communities.
