LAGOS, Nigeria -The International Human Rights Commission calls for an urgent investigation into allegations that a foreign national is fuelling religious tensions in parts of Nigeria, warning the claims could worsen insecurity if left unchecked.
The organisation’s Nigeria chapter says reports circulating on social media linking a foreign individual to unrest in Benue and Plateau states are “serious” and require immediate scrutiny.
“Anyone found guilty, whether a citizen or a foreigner, must be held accountable under the law,” Country Director Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu says.
The commission urges Nigerian security agencies to conduct a “thorough, impartial and professional” investigation to establish the facts, stressing that justice must not be compromised by nationality or bias.
It also calls on the National Assembly to initiate legislative inquiries if necessary, while emphasising due process and fair trial standards.
“Justice must be served without fear or favour,” the statement adds.
IHRC raises concern over the spread of unverified and conflicting reports, particularly on international platforms, warning such narratives could damage Nigeria’s global image and inflame divisions.
“The spread of inconsistent or unverified information… may further inflame tensions,” it says.
The group urges Nigerians to remain calm, avoid misinformation and refrain from statements capable of deepening religious or ethnic fault lines.
