LAGOS, Nigeria – A pre-dawn fire tears through a three-storey commercial building housing textile shops in Yaba, Lagos, destroying goods but leaving no casualties, emergency officials confirm.
The blaze erupts around 3:15 a.m. on Oyabiyi Street, opposite the Nigeria Labour Congress office in Tejuosho, according to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
Firefighters from Somolu, Ilupeju and Sari Iganmu stations responded swiftly, containing the flames before they spread to nearby buildings.
“The building, which housed shops and stores containing stacked textile materials, was engulfed by fire,” says Controller General Margaret Adeseye, adding that rapid intervention prevents a wider disaster.
Authorities confirm no injuries or deaths, despite the scale of the inferno.
Officials also report a second overnight fire at Tower Aluminium Village in Dopemu, Agege, where offices and storage facilities sustain damage.
“In both incidents, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service ensured that the fires were contained without escalation,” Adeseye says.
The cause of both fires remains under investigation.
Emergency responders reiterate calls for improved fire safety compliance in commercial hubs, warning that densely packed goods and poor electrical systems continue to heighten risks in Lagos markets.
