LAGOS, Nigeria – Transport unions in Lagos pledge full support for the state’s reintroduced environmental sanitation exercise, agreeing to suspend commercial operations during designated hours.
Union leaders announce that vehicles will halt passenger loading between 6:30am and 8:30am on the last Saturday of every month to allow members participate in sanitation activities.
At a joint meeting, Environment Commissioner, Tokunbo Wahab, stresses collective responsibility.
“If we want a cleaner and flood-free state, all stakeholders must cooperate,” he says.
Transportation Commissioner, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, calls for widespread compliance to ensure effectiveness.
Representing the National Union of Road Transport Workers, State Secretary Usman Teslim assures enforcement.
“Members will clean their surroundings before resuming work,” he says.
The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria also confirms adherence, directing drivers to begin operations only after the sanitation window.
Authorities say the initiative aims to improve waste management, reduce flooding, and promote environmental sustainability across the state.
