KANO, Nigeria – A grieving father in Kano State appeals for support after losing his wife during childbirth, leaving him to care for quintuplets and nine other children.
Salisu Nufi’u recounts the tragedy in an interview with Africa Health Report on thursday following the death of his wife, Hafsatu Yusuf, at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.
“She told me, ‘I may not survive this. Please take care of our children,’” he says.
Initially expecting triplets, Nufi’u says doctors later confirmed five babies—three boys and two girls—after delivery.
Complications from severe bleeding led to her death despite efforts by medical staff. “They did everything possible, but the bleeding did not stop,” he says.
Now responsible for 14 children, the tricycle rider says the burden is overwhelming.
“I don’t know where to start. They need food, healthcare, and education,” he adds.
His wife’s final wish—to educate their children—remains his greatest concern.
“I don’t want to fail her,” he says.
He calls on government and well-meaning Nigerians for urgent support.
