ASABA, Nigeria – The Delta State Government has condemned reported cases of harassment and sexual assault during the Ozoro Festival, describing the incidents as “barbaric” and unacceptable.
The outrage follows viral videos showing women being chased, assaulted, and stripped during festivities in Ozoro Kingdom.
Commissioner for Information Charles Aniagwu says no cultural celebration justifies criminal acts.
“Such barbaric acts are totally unacceptable and have no place in our society,” he says.
Authorities confirm that security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, have been directed to investigate and prosecute those responsible.
The festival, a traditional event in Isoko North, has come under scrutiny amid allegations that individuals exploited it to violate women’s rights.
Aniagwu reiterates the government’s zero tolerance for gender-based violence and pledges justice for victims.
Officials stress that cultural heritage must align with modern human rights standards.
The incident has sparked widespread public outrage, with calls for accountability and stronger safeguards at public events
