ABUJA, Nigeria – Several passengers were injured after a train travelling along the Abuja–Kaduna Railway derailed on Monday morning, authorities and witnesses say.
The train was travelling from Kaduna to Abuja when the incident occurred, briefly halting the journey before the service later continued toward Kubwa.
Passengers describe a sudden jolt after a loud noise, which causes panic and injuries inside the train.
“We heard a loud bang and the train jolted to a stop, flinging people across,” passenger Sada Malumfashi says.
He adds that several travellers suffered injuries during the incident.
“Passengers got hit, and most are bleeding and severely injured,” he says. “The train stopped for about 30 minutes before it continued to Kubwa, but there was no communication from railway authorities.”
Officials from the Nigerian Railway Corporation confirm the derailment.
Spokesperson Callistus Unyimadu says the agency is assessing the situation and will release a detailed statement.
The Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor is one of Nigeria’s busiest passenger railway routes, frequently used by commuters travelling between the capital and northern commercial centres.
The railway has become a preferred travel option for many passengers following security concerns on the Abuja–Kaduna highway in recent years.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the derailment or the number of passengers injured.
