YOLA, Nigeria – Surgeons at the Modibbo Adamawa University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH) successfully separate four-month-old, conjoined twins in a complex surgical operation, hospital officials say.
The procedure, performed in Yola, lasts about three hours and is led by Professor Abubakar Auwal, a paediatric surgery specialist and former Chief Medical Director of the hospital.
Auwal confirms that the twins, aged four months and two weeks, are joined at the abdominal region but are successfully separated following careful planning by a multidisciplinary medical team.
“This is the sixth conjoined twins’ separation performed in this hospital by our team,” Auwal says.
He adds that the hospital has built increasing expertise in complex paediatric surgery through skilled personnel, modern equipment and institutional support.
“In this hospital, this is the sixth separation, although we have handled similar procedures before, including cases in Maiduguri,” he explains.
Medical experts say separating conjoined twins requires extensive pre-surgical planning and collaboration between surgeons, anaesthesiologists and specialised paediatric teams.
Auwal notes that the success reflects the hospital’s growing capacity to manage complicated medical conditions involving children.
Health officials say the achievement reinforces MAUTH’s role as a major referral centre for specialised healthcare services across northeastern Nigeria.
