ABUJA, Nigeria – The United States Embassy in Abuja issues a security alert warning of a high risk of protests in Nigeria’s capital, urging American citizens to remain indoors amid rising global tensions linked to the Israel-Iran conflict.
In an advisory released Wednesday, the embassy says previous demonstrations tied to Middle East crises have escalated into violent clashes between protesters and Nigerian security forces. It strongly recommends that all U.S. citizens in the Federal Capital Territory stay at home throughout the day.
“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens that there is a high potential for protests in Abuja today, March 4, 2026,” the statement says. “Previous protests by some groups have resulted in violent clashes.”
The embassy urges residents to avoid protest locations, steer clear of crowds and remain vigilant if caught near large gatherings. It also advises varying travel routes and times, maintaining a low profile and reviewing personal security plans.
Citizens are encouraged to keep mobile phones fully charged, carry valid identification and stay alert in public places such as shopping centres, cinemas and places of worship. The advisory further recommends monitoring local media and identifying emergency exits when entering buildings.
Despite the warning, the embassy confirms that its Consular Section in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General Lagos remain open, urging citizens to follow official communication channels for updates.
The alert comes amid heightened global anxiety as the Israel-Iran conflict deepens, raising fears of spillover protests in several countries, including Nigeria.
