ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Capital Territory Administration approves ₦7.3 billion for waste management contracts covering four major districts, signalling a renewed push to tackle Abuja’s sanitation crisis.
The approvals are ratified on Monday at an FCT Executive Committee meeting chaired by Minister Nyesom Wike, according to officials.
The contracts cover refuse collection and environmental management in Durumi, Wuye, Mabushi and Jabi, while also approving a two-year diesel supply agreement for the Wupa Basic Waste Treatment Plant.
Chief Felix Obuah, Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, confirms the figure while addressing journalists.
“The total amount approved for these sanitation contracts is ₦7.3 billion,” Obuah says.
The committee also approves separate relief contracts for food and non-food items for residents displaced by recent flooding across the capital.
Officials say the decisions reflect an effort to balance environmental management with humanitarian response as Abuja grapples with population growth and climate-related pressures.
While the administration has yet to disclose the contractors, observers say the move signals renewed seriousness in restoring cleanliness to Nigeria’s seat of power.
